New industries come to compete on the App Store every day. Recently, however, Spotify has taken the led and issued a complaint about the App Store, or as they called the Apple Tax. The reason for this complaint is because, at the App Store, there are some rules limiting the "choice and stifle innovation at the expense of the user experience".
The main reason because Apple works as a player with its own mobile apps like Apple Music and other apps, but also as a referee. This is because the company takes a percentage of each to sell any mobile app does on the online store, and Spotify has said it takes "deliberately disadvantage of other app developers".
Nowadays, as the CEO of Spotify, Daniel Ek, has mentioned on a press release, Apple has different treatments for each player, including, as Ek said "Uber or Deliveroo". Their main asking is not to have a special treatment, but having the opportunity to keep a competitive price, without the need of increasing the Spotify Subscription price by 30%, which is what Apple charges App Developers.
You, as mobile app development companies, what do you think about this new complaint to the European Commission? Do you believe it is a good move from Spotify? Just take in mind, that probably Netflix will be in the same position in the near future if the Apple Streaming Service is launched the next 29th of March.
After filing the complaint, Apple has replied to the suit from Spotify to the European Commission. The iOS manufacturer and App Store owner, has answered almost all questions related to Spotify's lawsuit. Except some of the most important ones.
Spotify, which asked why mobile apps like Uber, Deliveroo or Amazon do not get taxed with what they called the "App Store tax". However, this is one of the major questions unanswered by the Cupertino company.
You can read all the reply from Apple on their official webpage. What do you think? Does Spotify have the right to file a lawsuit against Apple? Is Apple the good player in this debate?
