Review hedgehog lab
hedgehog lab is a global technology consultancy that specializes in multi-platform software and connected device innovation. We architect, design, develop, and market augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality and other digital solutions for phones, tablets & connected devices.
We help global brands & enterprises prepare for a future dominated by emerging technologies. Founded as a pure play consultancy in 2010, and with offices in London, Newcastle upon Tyne, Boston, Austin, India and Copenhagen, hedgehog lab has a team that is growing rapidly by focusing on delivering great digital experiences and campaigns to clients across the globe.
We have architected and developed mobile solutions and software for clients like News International, Channel 4, AkzoNobel, The Financial Times, Reckitt Benckiser plc, Booths, Statoil, Santander, Mitsubishi, Thales, Gain Capital, Societe Bic, East Coast Trains, CBRE, England Rugby, NESN, Northumbrian Water, Thinking Digital, HULT.
hedgehog lab has developed an iPad application using the latest technology in augmented reality. The team of app developers followed all the different steps required by the company and without any problem at all. The app had to been developed in a tight schedule and became part of a museum once it was delivered.
The product is awesome and it has been quite well received among the community. In fact, we have received good PR from the mobile application itself. The team was amazing and our project manager was really accessible. The only problem we had was that they couldn't be really creative as we had a tight schedule and all our parameters were already established from our company, but I would highly recommend them and I would suggest to be open-minded for their comments as they are really experienced.
Our Immersive team has been exploring ways to raise productivity across sectors by leveraging the potential of mixed reality technology. Shaun Allan has been advocating AR/VR and MR at various networking events and in one such event, he connected with Mike Taulty and Pete Daukintis from Microsoft. They discussed the prospect of using Microsoft’s Mixed Reality hardware in the automobile industry.
To explore the idea further, Shaun got in touch with Anya Bramich from Zero Carbon Futures. Zero Carbon Futures, an electrical vehicle consultancy – has been assisting towns, cities and nations to adapt the introduction of low carbon vehicles.
Shaun and Anya discussed the issue of maintenance in electric cars like Nissan Leaf. The brainstorming sessions led to the development of a prototype intervention for assisting maintenance technicians to ‘remove, repair and replace’ fuel cells from a Nissan Leaf.
The prototype has been amazing and everyone is excited about the future possibilities.
The global banking group, Santander, recognised the banking industry is about to change rapidly, with the growth of fintech digital technologies that are set to disrupt the industry. With this in mind, Santander's innovation team got in touch with our Boston office to explore how AR, VR, MR and mobile could change banking. From there, our team of designers and UX researchers embarked on an innovation exercise involving multiple design sprints to generate an innovation vision for Santander.
We were approached by Mitsubishi Motors to discuss hedgehog lab collaborating with them on a connected car design brief using the Android Auto operating system to produce a Vision & concepts for their European car launches in 2017 and further.
Our design team were given an open brief and tasked with holding a design sprint to look at direction and areas we could focus our vision for connected cars on – looking at solutions for the short term in 2017, and also mid term for 2020.
Thales is a world-leading innovator across the Aerospace, Defence, Ground Transportation, Security and Space industries.
Thales Group, a leading multinational, designs and builds electrical systems as well as providing services for sectors like defence and security. The company contacted us to discuss a collaborative partnership related to a large-scale digital project focused on the worldwide UAS (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle System) industry.
Following a one-day workshop, aimed at getting to the heart of the problem, we undertook an innovation sprint to explore possible solutions. These we outlined in a concept proposal, which uncovered opportunities for the short, medium and long term, keeping in mind how certain technologies will no doubt advance in the coming years. The proposal was presented to Thales during a follow-up workshop.
We worked with the manufacturer on this “Internet of things” app. It allows the user to connect to their washing machine with phones and tablets and control it from the comfort of another room and customize wash programmes to meet their needs.
After discovery sessions and a workshop to determine the functions of the app we mapped out the app and produced wireframes (see example below) for all sequences and scenarios a user would be faced with. We were provided with a prototype machine to work with and test on.
Users can select from pre-programmed washes or create their own custom washes. The app also saves the last five washes or allows the users to select a favorite wash. The app gives full control over all the wash functions, a wash can be stopped, started or paused from a users phone or tablet and whilst in progress a timer shows how long is left and what stage the wash is at.
Portl, as our solution is known, is a universal app – that is one that works on both the iPhone and the iPad, using the same codebase. It differs from the competition through emphasising ‘introductions’, not just available jobs, and is highly user-friendly, with intuitive registration and easy onboarding processes.
At the heart the app is a search feature that lets clients find freelancers based on different criteria. Once they have narrowed down their selection, they can then purchase credits to ‘unlock’ freelancers’ profiles and access contact details. We even included an availability update request so clients could first ensure selected individuals will be free to work when required. The app, which integrates geolocation, also allows users to communicate via email, text, WhatsApp or social media.

We built the app to celebrate two ten-year anniversaries, both of which took place in 2017: the launch of Apple’s iPhone and of hedgehog lab itself. Over the years, we’ve proved to be a match made in heaven, changing the face of the mobile and connected devices space. So we thought: why not play a little? We think you’ll love the result.
Dr Tom Mole, of Cambridge University, is one of the UK’s leading experts on meditation and mindfulness. So when he asked us to build an app that would not only help people master the practice, but ultimately aid his research, we were more than happy to help.
Mindz, a Proof of Concept for which had already been developed, takes users through a 56 day course of guided meditations. As they progress, they are rewarded with inspirational flashcards, poems and quotes, and can see their ‘path’ depicted visually on the stunning mountain imagery featured on the landing page. Users can also supplement their practice with one-off meditation sessions. Either way, they will be able to access detailed feedback on how they are doing through a revolutionary tool known as the MindfulBreather.

Klipcraze is the first ever competitive social app where users can win amazing prizes for free. Everyone has the same chance to win, there are no judges or random winners. Users find a prize they like, join the craze and complete the task to win.
We were initially engaged to rebuild the front end of an existing iOS app, attaching to existing APIs. The design of the app was severely outdated so after suggesting a number of quick wins, the client requested us to refresh the UX and UI on key parts of the app to bring it up to date with current iOS design standards.
After seeing multiple issues with the way the APIs had been written, in terms of coding standards, missing functionality and ease of integrating them into the front end, we took on a full rewrite of the API dataset as well as rebuilding the data structure.
Medialogix specialises in digital workflow and digital asset management solutions with a strong presence in the public sector helping the NHS, Government and Regional police forces to manage sensitive media assets. With mobile becoming a key tool in the policing front, they approached us to build a Media Uploader app for a regional police force that allowed officers to capture images, video and audio in the field, fill in a form with relevant case information and upload it to a central asset server. This would enable officers to spend more time out in the field and less time filling in paper work.
The future of the Digital Bill Experience for household customers and SME businesses
Northumbrian Water approached hedgehog lab, along with a select number of local companies to participate in & lead a design sprint.
We were nominated to run the design sprint and lead the UX and design elements of the sprint, with the other companies focusing more on their core specialties which included existing data feasibility and Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality technologies.
A video-based dating app promoted by Geordie Shore’s Charlotte Crosby, ShowReal aims to give users a better sense of potential matches than its more ‘traditional’ rivals.
To get started, would-be-daters simply submit a video of themselves answering four straightforward questions, at which point the app splices the material together to create a ‘ShowReal’ for them
They can then search for other people’s ShowReals, matching specific preferences, and can view those people’s profiles through Facebook and Instagram integration.
Should they like what they see, they can choose to ‘Keep’, shifting the selected ShowReal user into a
‘Real Messages’ list. Otherwise, they can either ‘Cut’ or – should some potential exist – offer a second chance through requesting the user re-do his or her ShowReal.
The app also offers a secondary list, showing users those who have ‘liked’ them or whose preferences they match.
UI-wise, it includes a unique circle video recorder.
Tenant Genie provides cloud-based tools for landlords to help manage rental investments, making sure tenants are safe and properties are taken care of.Tenant Genie approached hedgehog lab as a startup, looking to create an online platform that cuts out online agents and allows landlords to manage their properties themselves.
A web app has now launched as its first product, it can be used to store and deal with paperwork in a handy ‘Binder’ feature, organise repairs with contractors and interact with tenants; without paying the high costs associated with agents.
“I have been pleasantly surprised by the consistently high quality service delivered by hedgehog lab and would highly recommend their services to anyone looking for a hard working company in the Software Development sector.” –Zuhair Taher, Co Founder.
Working in partnership with Tenant Genie, hedgehog lab have thoroughly enjoyed making the platform a reality and are delighted with the end result.
Led by a collective of North East councils, the Road Respect campaign aimed to discourage young people from driving after drinking or taking drugs. Organisers knew an app would needed to ensure the message stuck and saw AR could have a major impact with the tech-savvy demographic.
After being given access to empty stores in the Metrocentre, Gateshead, and The Bridges shopping centre, Sunderland, we used vinyl stickers to make it seem like they were car accessory shops, the ‘accessories’ featuring the campaign hashtag #idiotisachoice. These new ‘shop fronts’, then, acted as a trigger for an app that showed a Vauxhall Corsa crashing through the window – accompanied by the sound of screeching brakes, smashing glass and engine revving – the instant tablets were pointed at them. Campaign teams could thus use this to attract passersby, who would go on to take part in simulations within the stores themselves.
Few large-scale events pack the prestige of the Great Exhibition of the North, a £5m initiative to highlight the North of England’s art, design and innovation. NewcastleGateshead Initiative knew its bid had to be special - and therefore brought Shaun Allan, now our Director of Immersive Technologies, on board.
With just three weeks to provide a solution, Shaun settled on 360 VR supported by 3D modelling, then spent a fortnight filming landmarks, flying a drone along the Tyne and collecting footage of performances from the likes of Fatboy Slim. The following week he dedicated to editing this together to offer a flavour of the region as well as logistical data.
The pitch itself was conducted using Samsung GearVR headsets, which he gave to the judges along with instructions on how to activate them to sync with the external audio. The approach worked perfectly. Within seconds, the judges were immersed – and, of course, NGI soon learned it had won.
Although the Road Respect campaign was effective as a whole, there was one area we felt could be significantly improved; the simulator, which was screen-based and used generic landscapes, failed to immerse the user in the experience of driving. We therefore contacted organisers following our initial involvement to discuss creating new version run through VR headsets. We already had a 3D model of Newcastle’s Quayside prepared and were able to use this as a starting point for our hard-hitting proposal.
The multi-thread social and business messaging app. Dooey lets you message in groups and branch out into different topics. Chat with friends and family or use it for business, speak to clients/teams and share files easily.
Dooey’s founder, John Connor, approached us with a vision for a new kind of messaging app – one that would simplify users’ lives by bringing work and social communications together in a single place. Based on a clutter-free interface, Dooey would also offer a clear alternative to typical messaging platforms.
With this brief in mind, we divided the app into two dedicated a channels, allowing users to switch seamlessly between ‘social’ and ‘business’ modes, and to allocate contacts to one or the other. We also developed a communication tool known as ‘branching’, which allows users to stray from the main thrust of conversations to focus on certain points using connected chat boxes.
Central to the design team’s thinking was clean and clear functionality.
