Top app development companies interview: itCraft

Bartosz Pieślak is the CEO and co-Owner of itCraft. The mobile app development company was founded in 2010 by Karol Wegner and himself. It is located in Poland. The mobile app development company has 35 mobile app developers and other IT professionals.

Bartosz used to work in corporation as a tech leader. He was engaged in systems of cash in banks process management optimisation, factoring and insurance systems.

Let’s see what Bartosz Pieślak has to say about itCraft and the mobile app development world.

What does itCraft do?

We deliver mobile apps hassle free thanks to our software craftsmanship approach. We know our craft inside out. Using our experience, we advise how to create mobile app based business. Every project is different and there are no standard solutions. Every project has a learning curve which allows us to gain new skills. Every project creates challenges we have to address. Its our creativity and knowledge of technology put at our clients' disposal.

What makes us unique:

  • We deliver 100% of our projects. No compromise on technology. No compromise on ethics.
  • We offer unbeatable prices and we never charge upfront. Our remuneration is directly linked to the progress of our work.
  • We have experience in building our own successful apps such as Truckersky or SupraCare.

What clients have you worked for?

DHL, Fracht AG, Top Secret, Makro Cash&Carry, LUX MED (Bupa Group), Warsaw City, Liqui-moly, MEDI-system (Orphea group), Asseco and lots of startup companies.

We also develop our own solutions and ideas like SupraCare, Truckersky, Yumer or Conference Networking.

If you had to choose one category, what kind of app do you think is your mobile app development company’s specialty?

We are experienced in Uber-like systems. We look at them from the user's perspective. For the user, it is just a perfect solution. Why? You just click to order a driver - do not have to wait for connection, when driver comes, knows where to pick you up, you have the current location of the driver on your screen and what is also very important, drivers come quickly and you do not even need to have a cash to pay for a ride.

In our opinion, "Uber" is the future but not only in the transportation branch - also in many others. Do you know UberEATS? Right! The project is becoming more and more popular in many countries. We have Uber-like applications in our portfolio but in other branches - we for example introduced the HomeDoctor application that is known as "Uber for Doctors".

Another example from the same stable of Uber like apps is GTme. GTme is a tracking device for locating the best group training and fitness sessions, the closest to you. GTme finds your local training groups and classes and allows you to enrol on your mobile so you know you have a place in that class. Whether you are enrolling for a yoga session or for a morning workout in your local park, you know that when you arrive you will not be disappointed because your instructor will be there and you will have reserved place.

What is the average budget of the mobile apps you develop?

Preferably, we feel in realisations that take up around 3 months since the start of the implementation with the budget around $70,000 – $90,000.

Do you develop all mobile apps in-house or do you outsource some parts of the process?

The whole development process takes place in-house in our offices in Poland. This way we have full stranglehold on terms and quality. We can build and fit teams that are efficient with communication. We also guarantee qualifications as we know each other well and work side by side.

Which would you say are the best mobile apps that your company has developed?

The biggest success of our team is definitely SupraCare system. SupraCare enables organisations to manage individual patient or client plans, organise work processes, and make data-driven decisions to increase efficiency and drive up the quality and safety of care. The highly flexible and configurable system is based on a web application, designed to plan and monitor daily work in an organisation; and a tablet application placed in multiple locations across the organisation to be used by staff to check, monitor and record completion of scheduled activities.

Our algorithms dedicated for the LTC industry generated over 20 millions of tasks for employees such as nurses, rehabilitators and attendants. Our product has already been implemented in Tabita LTC centre of Bupa group.

Except for the solutions, that are well-established, we also have some likely-looking startup solutions from the transport (Truckersky) and fitness (GTme) industries. These solutions have all the features for the fast adoption in the following months.

Do you prefer to build mobile apps with native, hybrid or web languages?

We develop applications with native technology. Our offer is addressed to companies that care for high standard solutions so we do not leave something to be desired in UI and UX areas. We focus on the best technologies, this is how we have become Google Cloud Solution official partner.

Let’s focus on iOS and Android mobile app development. Which are the Pros and Cons of each platform?

About dominance of iOS over Android, and vice versa, people have already written too much. From the app developer perspective, the most important is that both platforms are better and better every day and give more possibilities for building software. Finally, our clients are the ones who decide the platforms we use to develop the app product.

Actually, the market is dominated by Android and iOS but we should remember that the offers for mobile Windows also exist! The interesting observation is geographical affection to the platform. For example, an MVP in the USA is usually built for iOS, but an MVP for Polish clients will usually be Android.

Interesting is also the interest in platforms according to industries - doctors usually prefer iOS but system for production company is definitely Android. We advise but do not stigmatize any of the platforms - both have similar possibilities and we can address and effectively resolve similar problems with them.

Which one will evolve more within the next 5 years?

The evaluation of currently using platforms within the next 5 years should be considered more in a context of what will replace them, not how they will evolve. We had some first attempts with Google Glass, smartwatches and other wearables. On the other hand, inspiring are the visions presented in popular Netflix's TV series Black Mirror, where with technology we can record the video of our whole lives and we can wind to any moment from the past and analyse or mention chosen event repeatedly. I rather count on another revolution in hi-tech world than a 5 year evolution of well known solutions.

Which device is the best in the market right now?

That depends on who you ask. As in each mobile software house, we have supporters of hardware with the Apple logo but also Android believers. Personally, I prefer devices from the second family.

Currently I use the smartphone One Plus brand and I really like it. Powerful parameters, fast camera and a reasonable price make it a good proposition. We also have an experience with Sony Xperia tablets that we have been using for years as a recommended hardware for SupraCare system. Unfortunately the model will disappear from the market. It is hard to find a fit successor of that model that has an NFC module.

And which device do you feel more comfortable developing an app for?

In our team we have people that are passionate about each technology in which we are working so we can answer that question: we feel comfortable in Swift, Java as well as other recommended technologies like Angular for web solutions or Google Cloud for backend.

Getting back to mobile technologies, from the developing process point of view, I can say that iOS is more grateful. Mainly because the choice of devices we need to test and support is significantly lower than in the case of Android. Maintaining an iOS application, its development and testing is much easier and relatively cheaper.
