We're featuring Tomasz Muter today, the co-founder and vice-president of Droids on Roids, a mobile & web development company located in Wroclaw, Poland. The company has over 50 employees and was founded by Tomasz and Wojciech Szwajkiewicz back in 2011.

What does your mobile app development company do?

Droids On Roids is a mobile and web development company from Poland, established in 2011.

We offer our clients full mobile, web and backend services: iOS development (native, Flutter), Android development (native, Flutter) and Web development (front-end, back-end). Our services also include:

  • Workshops (where we crystallize the vision of your mobile or web application),
  • UX/UI Design,
  • Project Maintenance,
  • Quality Assurance.

Our core programming languages are: Java, Kotlin, Dart, Swift, Ruby, Objective-C, C (NDK) and JavaScript.

We have ranked twice in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Central Europe (2015 & 2017), as well as included in the Forbes Diamonds 2018. Droids On Roids is also a member of the Google Developers Agency Program and ITCorner - Wroclaw Fellowship of Technology

What clients have you worked for?

We have completed projects for 107 partners from around the world - USA, Canada, UK and more. Among our clients are both global brands and great startups like GIPHY & Electric Objects.

What’s more, we’ve developed the first versions of world-renowned apps like LiveChat (the leader in the live chat sector) and Docplanner.

Industries: IoT, m-commerce, travel, social, health, and HR.

If you had to choose one category, what kind of app do you think is your mobile app development company’s specialty?

Native Development for both iOS and Android platforms, especially when it comes to apps for the Internet of Things (IoT). Examples of our work include:

Skybuds - this app gives users more control over their wireless earphones and Skydock (a wireless charging dock) through Bluetooth 4.0 (Bluetooth Classic & Bluetooth Low Energy).

Loop - the app connects to the Wi-Fi display and allows you to seamlessly share video, photos & video chat with your friends and family. Our case study: https://www.thedroidsonroids.com/casestudy/loop-app

Electric Objects - this app allows users to control the content displayed on their HD framed screens across homes or offices.

Sex toys app - we have also developed a great application for one of the biggest wireless sex gadgets manufacturer which we can’t name at the moment because of an NDA with our client.

What is the average budget of the mobile apps you develop?

Based on data from the last 2 years, the average project value is $155,000

Do you develop all mobile apps in-house or do you outsource some parts of the process?

We are a 100% office-based team, so we develop all apps in-house. We work all together at one place, at the same time.

Pros

Being an office-based company results in efficient knowledge sharing & smooth teamwork. It speeds up the development process and helps us build our organizational culture. We know each other personally, which helps us to integrate and create our amazing team spirit. What’s more, our clients always feel invited to visit and meet us in person in our brand new office in the heart of Wroclaw (Poland).

Cons

We can only recruit people locally or from other places through offering a relocation budget.

Which would you say are the best mobile apps that your company has developed and why?

We’re proud of every single app we’ve developed and we’re always totally committed to the projects we work on. In our portfolio, you can find GIPHY Cam - this app enables users to record GIFs, add filters & special FX before sharing them via Social Media. It is highly popular and actively used, achieving over 400 million global monthly views! The app was a nominee in 2016’s Best use of mobile Camera rankings. GIPHY Cam uses many different technologies, such as OpenGL, Face Recognition and Speech Recognition.

We have been working with industry leaders like LiveChat and Docplanner. In both cases, we’ve delivered apps that meet client expectations and provide a smooth enjoyable experience.

Do you prefer to build mobile apps with native, hybrid or web languages? Why?

We specialize in native development for iOS and Android. Why? Because these are solutions officially supported by Apple and Google, respectively. They provide high quality, broad backing and stability. Furthermore, we keep up with the market and, these days, our R&D department checks out new solutions, such as Flutter, which we are currently learning.

Let’s focus on iOS and Android mobile app development. What are the Pros and Cons of each platform?

Android Pros

  • Users are used to free services, but there are more Android users than Apple users
  • The system allows for more, is more flexible and has a greater range of innovative solutions

Android Cons

  • The number of devices is much larger
  • Wide fragmentation of the market - we currently have about 10 versions of Android currently in use (for development, we have to remember about matching an app to existing systems in different versions)

iOS Pros

  • Limited number of devices (which makes iOS apps easier to design, develop and test)
  • iOS apps generate more revenue - people using them statistically buy more than Android users
  • Small market fragmentation - there are less iOS versions on the market than Android versions

Which one will evolve more within the next 5 years?

In our opinion, Android will evolve more within the next 5 years. As we’ve seen at the last Google I/O conference, Google invests a loT in artificial intelligence like Google Assistant, creating an ecosystem that’s incredibly friendly for users and available on vast range of devices.

Which device is the best in the market right now?

The latest version of the iPhone, iPhone X, because it fits the user’s needs the best. It’s worth remembering that the the majority of users only need basic functionalities when it comes to their smartphone and the iPhone has been meeting these expectations the best for years. It’s fast, reliable and has a nice look & feel.

And which device do you feel more comfortable developing an app for? Why?

In our opinion - Pixel and Pixel 2 are the most comfortable devices from the developers’ point of view. They are the flagship products of Google, so they offer the original and unaltered version of Android without any modifications, additions or overlays from other devices’ manufacturers. Generally, everything works exactly as in the official documentation of Android. What’s more, when it comes to the wider Android market Pixel has all the updates available first - other devices follow it.
