Top app development companies interview: Victor Costache - Devodrome

Published on Mar 05, 2015 in App Development

Victor Costache is President of Devodrome. The company, founded in 1999 by himself and Dragos Cimpoiasu, is located in Bucharest, Romania, and has over 20 employees. Victor started his IT career 20 years ago as a C/C++ developer. He became a project manager and his last position before starting Devodrome was CTO. Here's what he had to say about his company and the mobile world:

What do you do?

Devodrome is mainly focused on native mobile app development for iOS, Android (phones and tablets), and Windows Phone lately.

Apple made publicly available the first version of the iOS SDK back in 2008, and our senior mobile developers have been developing apps ever since. It is worth mentioning because the developers' experience is one of the key factors for building a successful app.

Also, since almost any mobile app requires a web back-end these days, our team comprises web developers able to develop and deploy the needed web components (database, web services API, admin panel, responsive front-end) on both dedicated servers and could hosting.

Most of the Devodrome clients are looking for a reliable agency able to deliver an end-to-end solution (i.e. the comfort of having their ideas brought to life by team responsible for the whole project: business requirements analysis, specs drafting, visual design, project management, implementation, QA, deployment, warranty, post-launching support).

The graphic designers part of the Devodrome team are those who make the apps to look professional. The user interface (UI) of the app has a great impact on the user experience. Therefore, this very important aspect of the mobile app, which comes in the early stages of the implementation, is taking care by graphic designers with experience in creating UI for mobile apps.

Last but not least, having over 50 mobile apps published to date along with the experience we gathered during the design and development of hundreds of projects over the past 15 years (from the small one to the enterprise class projects), and continuously improvement of our method of work, help us to cope with the difficulties that could arise during the development, which actually makes the difference between failure and a successful project.

The quality of the implementation gives the real value of the client's idea. When it comes to mobile app development services, the most important assurance the client can get (that he is not going to waste his time and money) is the proven experience of the team responsible for developing the app.

Which would you say are the best apps you have developed and why?

Although it is no longer on App Store, I would start by mentioning the Look See app, which was our very first important app (it was one of the top 5 apps on App Store in its category at that time, 6 years ago).

Lingopal is one of the most popular app we have worked on (over 5 million downloads). It was not entirely developed by us. The client needed a team with experience in audio effects/processing, so we mostly contributed on the audio component of the app (player, effects) and improvements in usability.

OLBG is an app we have been continuously working on since 2012. We are very proud to see that OLBG is downloaded by 10k+ users each month, and the reviews are great.

Which apps would you have loved to develop and why?

There are a few apps/games (very popular) currently on the market that crossed to my mind (very similar ideas) way before they have been launched. WhatsApp and Lazors are just two of them.

Which are the 5 apps you use the most on a daily basis?

I mainly use my phone for making phone calls, e-mails and calendar (and maps/GPS when I travel). Over the years I tried almost all of the top smartphones (both iOS and Android) we purchased for development, and none of them offers real productivity (not even close to the productivity I get using a PC or portable PC).

Which mobile device is the best in the market right now?

Must have? I really do not think there is such a “necessary to have” mobile device on the market at this point. Depending on the specific needs someone has, the user can choose the device that suits best for her/him (that s/he affords purchasing it).

Which one is best? This mainly depends on what you are looking for (e.g. Apple over Google preference, trendiness, screen size, battery life, camera resolution). Personally I would go with the Android devices mainly because I prefer the greater flexibility/freedom that Android offers (but I could not say which one is best because each and every model I tested has its own pros and cons).

What kind of device/platform will be the next big thing?

In my opinion the next big thing is defined by the word “convergence” (i.e. using the same device from a simple phone to a powerful PC). All of the major players (Apple, Google and Microsoft) have plans in unifying their platforms, and considering the current hardware components performance in the mobile world, I think we are not too far from the moment of seeing the first “converged” device on the market.

Why is AppFutura useful to you?

AppFutura gives Devodrome more visibility (driving more traffic to our website) and, more importantly, we get more leads from prospects who found us on AppFutura (directly on the website), or through search engines (AppFutura being high ranked on the “mobile app development” related searches).

Another important thing for the entire AppFutura community (developers and customers at the same time) is the active involvement of the AppFutura staff in the customer-developer interaction (filtering the clients/projects, recommending the client the suitable candidates for the project etc.). In the long run this will make AppFutura a strong market renowned for both the quality of the projects and developers.
