Matteo Chiampo - MD Affle AppStudioz

Matteo Chiampo is Managing Director of Apps Platform Business at Affle Appstudioz. The company, founded in 2005 by Anuj Khanna Sohum and Anuj Kumar, is located in Singapore (HQ), Noida, Gurgaon, Jakarta (Indonesia), Shanghai (China), and employs more than 350 people. Here’s what Matteo had to say about his company and the mobile world:

What does Affle Appstudioz do?

Affle has built a fast-growing mobile platform business over the last few years by offering App Development, App Marketing, and App Analytics services over its MAAS platform. Specifically, Affle Appstudioz, the business I run, is a leading and fast-growing developer of mobile applications. We specialize in understanding our clients’ mobility needs, and providing the most appropriate solution leveraging our 165+ engineers.

We develop hybrid/cross-platform, HTML and native apps, with deep expertise in all the main mobile platforms (iOS, Android, Windows, etc.). We have developed or improved over 1,500 apps, working closely with entrepreneurs, startups, and large enterprises. We leverage our end-to-end understanding of mobile audiences to help our clients not only develop, but also promote and monetize their apps. And we have a team especially dedicated to games development too!

Which would you say are the best apps Affle Appstudioz has developed and why?

There are so many apps we have developed, that it is hard to pick.

If I have to shortlist a few, I would say “Videocon universal remote app”, which allows you to control your Videocon DTH from your smartphone. This app is exciting because of the technical challenges our team had to solve, and because it shows the future of smartphones at the center of the whole entertainment ecosystem.

Also there’s another very interesting app which we have developed recently: “LoopTop”. The Affle Appstudioz team developed a custom camera and advanced image management solutions to deal with thousands of images that are uploaded on the app.

Finally, although this is not a specific app, we are seeing a growing trend towards creation and usage of health apps globally, with integration of many disparate activity trackers and wearables. Affle Appstudioz has developed extensive expertise in this field. One such app is “JoGo”, which motivates the users by giving them reward points for fitness activities. The users can claim these reward points for buying discounted lifestyle products across various ecommerce portals. Another great app worth mentioning here is “Lets”, which lets you identify your social network connections in your vicinity by projecting them on navigation map.

Which apps would you have loved to develop and why?

Hill Climb Racing. I love the game and would have liked to have developed this one at Affle!

Which are the 5 apps you use the most on a daily basis?

Surely mail and calendar apps are at the top of the list – great tools to keep me productive on the go. Talking of moving around, UBER and Ola are my apps of choice for local transport around Delhi/NCR, I use them multiple times a day. I find Flipkart & Amazon mobile app very handy for quick online purchases. Finally, CamCard is super handy to digitize and track all the business cards I exchange with business partners and clients.

Which mobile device is the best in the market right now?

It is hard to single out one specific device, as OEMs are constantly bringing to market ever more refined and performant products – what is best in the market today will be surpassed by another device tomorrow. What I feel is that there are devices categories better-suited to different markets or usage patterns.

In the small-screen camp, I’d say a good value-for-money, 5-to-6 inches screen Android smartphone can be ideal, especially in South East Asia. iPhone is obviously a strong contender for must-have device, and we see higher adoption in the US and other developed countries. For larger screen size, Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 is a great hybrid for highly mobile professionals.

More importantly though, I think the apps ecosystem is what makes devices really helpful. I would rather focus on the quality and variety of apps offered on each platform, and then pick one of the many excellent devices available.

What kind of device/platform will be the next big thing?

What we see at Affle is, a trend towards more and more use of tracking and measuring devices, like activity trackers, wearables and other even more sophisticated measuring devices. I can see a future where a smartphone becomes a hub for multiple sensing devices, and many of us will wear or carry such tracking bits, as well as have them in our car, homes and offices. For example, Gatorade is using the smartphone to process data on pro athletes sweat, collected via a skin patch, and then sent to an advanced bottle which delivers personalized hydration closes to each athlete.
