Josh Garellek is the CEO of Arctic Empire. The company, founded in 2010 by himself, Ricardo Evangelho and Avi Davies, is a full service digital agency specializing in mobile branding solutions. It is located in Ottawa, Canada, and it has up to 8 employees. Josh has worked in the digital and technology sector for nearly 10 years. Here is what he had to say about his company, their work and the mobile world.
What do you do at Arctic Empire?
Arctic Empire is a full service digital agency specializing in mobile branding solutions. Our roots lie in independent game creation, but we have since expanded our services to meet our clients’ demands for the array of different ways creativity is called upon for digital media. Though we have particular expertise in native iOS development, our team is well-versed in Android, Blackberry and web development as well.
Which would you say are the best apps you have developed and why?
Recently we launched a game/app called Office Attacks!, which was built natively for iOS. Here, we have combined the classic tower defence genre with the relatable office theme. Players are tasked with building defense towers out of office supplies in order to help defend Steve Stevenson’s desk from the onslaught of annoying co-workers. With over a million possible tower combinations, we believe we’ve taken the strategy associated with classic tower defence to a new level and are very proud of our final product.
We are also in the process of releasing a redesign of our social betting application, Bet to Win. The app that allows you to place bets and share your wagers, pictures with friends over social media will be relaunched with a sexy new UI/UX.
What apps would you have loved to develop and why?
Well, who wouldn’t want to have developed Whatsapp, given recent developments? The concept of Tinder is fascinating because it has taken an old concept (online dating), and simplified it to the point that it is extremely user-friendly. I think apps that connect people in a fun way is what most of the success stories we see now can really be boiled down to. In this digital age, I think it’s natural that we seek out more and more creative ways to interact with each other.
Which are the 5 apps you use the most on a daily basis?
Which mobile device is the best in the market right now?
I am a self-professed Apple lover. I recently moved over to the iPhone (an uncertain shift from my Android device) and now I cannot live without it. I love it!!! That being said, I think there are some really great devices coming out with the inclusion of wearables. I am excited to see where the market goes as this is a really interesting time.
What kind of device/platform will be the next big thing?
As I just mentioned above, I think wearable devices are going to be huge. Just take a look at Pebble. They set the market with their Kickstarter campaign. Now Google glass and every major software and hardware company is working to enter this market. With so much emphasis on health and fitness these days, I have no doubt this is an area where a major push is imminent.
Why is AppFutura useful to you?
AppFutura is a great way to analyze the mobile market and see what people are looking to build. A great advantage to the site is its inclusion of international projects, which offers an interesting look outside the major North American markets.
