Best Apps 2014

Google has published the list of 2014’s best Android apps. Google makes this list every year, based both on the applications’ relevancy and on the audience opinions. This time, the company has selected the 64 best applications from the more than 600.000 apps available on Google Play Store.

The list includes both free and paid apps, though the paid ones are just seven: Over, 7 Minute Workout Challenge, Afterlight, Facetune, djay 2, Ultimate Guitar Tabs & Chords and Amazing World Atlas. It includes some popular apps on different categories, like Shazam, TuneIn Radio, Skype Qik, Secret and the controversial Uber, but the list doesn’t contain any games; Google will probably release a specific list on this kind of applications soon.

Categories and platforms

We can divide the best apps of 2014 in 11 categories: productivity, education, entertainment, news, music & audio, sports & fitness, shopping, photography, personalization, social and travel.

The first app on the productivity category is Wunderlist: To-Do List & Tasks. This application allows you to create, manage and share as many to-do lists as you want, for your private or professional life, and you can access them from any of your devices. Wunderlist can also be used on Android Wear. The next apps on this category are SwiftKey Keyboard, IFTTT (If This, Then That), Sunrise Calendar, Todoist: To-Do List, Task List and Mailbox.

On education, the best ones according to Google are TED, an app that allows users to watch hundreds of educational content, Amazing World Atlas (paid), Lumosity and Duolingo Test Center, a perfect app for those who want to learn a language helped by other users. Duolingo is free, but the final exam to check your level of English with real people costs 20€. However, you can previously access all the free tests you want.

5by, the app to find, share, and chat about your favourite videos, and Dailymotion, which includes more than 30 million videos in Full HD, have been chosen as the best entertainment apps.

Yahoo News Digest

On the news section, Yahoo News Digest wins, for creating a comprehensive, effortless, and complete reading experience to the users. This app provides a definitive summary of all the important, need-to-know news, with digests delivered twice a day (once in the morning and once in the evening). All the top stories are created from multiple sources and summarized with the key information that you need to stay on top of what’s happening. Also in this category, we find BuzzFeed, an app to have all the latest popular videos, images and links right on your mobile device. Finally, there are some applications by renowned media as CNN and The New York Times.

About Music & Audio, some of the best apps are djay 2 (paid), Ultimate Guitar Tabs & Chords (paid), Shazam, the app to identify music, TuneIn Radio, SoundHound and musiXmatch, the number 1 lyrics player on Google Play Store and iTunes. musiXmatch is compatible with Android Wear and Chromecast, so you can follow the lyrics on your TV too.

The only category that includes an app by Google is Sports & Fitness, with Google Fit, which is evidently compatible with Android Wear. Some of the other apps are Onefootball – Pure Soccer!, which provides the latest football news and results, Golfshot: Golf GPS and 7 Minute Workout Challenge (paid).

On the Shopping category, Google selected Wish as the best one.

The next area is Photography; the best apps to edit and share your pictures, according to Google, are the paid ones Over, Afterlight and Facetune. This last one is created specially to edit portraits and selfies. We also find the free EyeEm and Carousel, which is Dropbox’s gallery for pictures and videos.

Locket Lock Screen

On the Personalisation category, the best apps are Locket Lock Screen, a lock screen that helps you learn English in a funny way, and Link Bubble Browser, an all-new browser designed with mobile devices in mind.

There are also a lot of Social applications, including Timehop, OKCupid, Secret, to share posts with friends anonymously, LINK – with people nearby, Telegram and Skype Qik: Group Video Chat.

For travelling, Google chose apps including Anywayanyday, the app for buying air tickets and making hotel reservations all over the world, minube or Uber, which is lately having some legal trouble. Although this app is amazingly popular all over the world, it’s considered illegal in more and more countries every day. Uber allows you to get in touch with a driver and pay for the ride at a better price than any other form of transport, especially taxi. As a result, taxi drivers around the planet are declaring themselves against the famous app. Uber has already been declared illegal in Holland, India or Thailand, and countries like Germany, France and Canada are working for its illegalization too. If everything continues as expected, Uber will be considered illegal in Spain from next month on.
